Harbour
Working Port
A real fishing harbour -- the fish on your plate was caught this morning
💡 Did You Know?
⚓
Gansbaai harbour is still a working fishing port. Unlike the tourist-oriented harbours of the Cape, Gansbaai's harbour launches commercial fishing boats daily. The catch comes ashore by mid-morning and reaches the harbour restaurants by lunch. You cannot get fresher fish anywhere in the Overberg.
🏙
De Kelders is Gansbaai's upmarket cliff-top suburb. Five minutes from the harbour, De Kelders sits on dramatic cliff caves overlooking Walker Bay. The restaurants here are a step up from the harbour -- fine dining with whale views in season.
🐘
You can watch whales while eating lunch. From De Kelders restaurants (Jul-Nov), Southern right whales are visible from your table. They come within 200m of the cliffs. No binoculars needed -- just a window seat.

Post-Shark-Dive Harbour Lunch▼
Come back from cage diving, walk 50m to the harbour restaurants, and eat the freshest fish of your life while processing what you just experienced. The hake and chips (R75) has never tasted better than after seeing a great white up close.

Book a cliff-side table at Tolbos in whale season (Jul-Nov). Order the seafood platter, and watch Southern right whales breach below your window. No whale-watching boat trip can match this -- you are warm, fed, and have wine.
Hidden Gem
Danger Point Lighthouse Picnic▼
Buy fish and chips at the harbour, drive 10 minutes to Danger Point lighthouse, and eat on the rocks where the HMS Birkenhead sank in 1852. The shipwreck gave us "women and children first." The views are hauntingly beautiful.

The harbour restaurants are cash-only sometimes. Card machines go offline in Gansbaai more than you would expect. Carry R300 cash as backup, especially for the harbour fish-and-chip shops.
🚗
De Kelders is where the food quality is. The harbour is great for fresh-and-simple fish, but De Kelders (5 min drive) has the proper restaurants. Go to the harbour for lunch, De Kelders for dinner.
💰
Buy fresh fish at the harbour and braai it yourself. If you are self-catering, buy line fish directly from the fishermen at the harbour (R50-R80/kg for hake or yellowtail). This is the cheapest fresh fish in the Western Cape. Bring a cooler box.
Gansbaai dining splits into two scenes: harbour simple and De Kelders refined. At the working fishing harbour, you eat the freshest hake and yellowtail in the Overberg, served in paper with chips. Five minutes up the road in De Kelders, cliff-top restaurants offer fine dining with whale views. Both are worth your time. The town's shark-diving fame brings visitors, but the food is the underrated reason to come -- or rather, the proximity to the fishing boats that land the catch each morning.
Great White House
★★★★☆4.3(567)$$
Main Rd, Gansbaai, 7220
The town's main restaurant, themed around its shark heritage without being tacky. Fresh line fish daily (market price, usually R135-R165). The seafood platter for two (R350) is the signature order. Casual atmosphere, outdoor seating with partial harbour views. Also does excellent steaks (R165-R195) for non-fish-eaters.
De Kelders' finest -- a cliff-top bistro with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Walker Bay. The menu leans Mediterranean with local seafood. Linefish of the day (R185), lamb loin with fynbos jus (R225). In whale season, this is the best restaurant in the Overberg for combining food and whale watching. Book a window table.
No-frills takeaway at the harbour serving fish that was swimming this morning. Hake and chips R75. Calamari and chips R85. Yellowtail when available (R95). Eat on the harbour wall watching the boats come in. Cash preferred. Open 10:00-17:00 daily. The best R75 meal in the Overberg.
