Did You Know?

During WWII, Saldanha Bay was a secret naval base — anti-submarine nets were strung across the bay entrance. Some remnants are still visible at low tide.
🐦
The salt pans at Saldanha attract enormous flocks of greater and lesser flamingos — sometimes 10,000+ birds visible from the road between Saldanha and Langebaan.
🚢
The 861 km iron ore railway line from Sishen to Saldanha is one of the longest single-commodity rail lines in the world. The trains are 2.5 km long.

Local Secrets

💡
The Hoedjiesbaai coastal walk (3 km) follows the bay shore with rock pools, small beaches and fishing spots. Almost no tourists — just locals walking their dogs.
🚢
Watch the ore ships loading at the jetty from the viewpoint on the R27 — enormous 200,000-tonne bulk carriers, an industrial spectacle unlike anything in SA.
🌄
North Head viewpoint offers panoramic views over the entire bay, the lagoon and the coastline. Drive up at sunset — free parking, no crowds.
Saldanha's activities are a mix of military heritage, nature watching and bay experiences that most West Coast tourists miss. The town's working-port character gives it an authenticity you won't find in the tourist villages. Birding is world-class, the naval museum is fascinating, and the mussel farm visits are unique to this area.
