During the ostrich feather boom (1880s-1914), Oudtshoorn was one of the wealthiest towns in South Africa. Feather barons built elaborate sandstone mansions that still line the town's streets.
The Cango Caves extend over 5km but only 1km is open to the public. The "Adventure Tour" involves crawling through narrow passages including the famous "Devil's Chimney."

The Swartberg Pass was built by Thomas Bain using convict labour over 7 years. It's a National Monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site — arguably the most beautiful mountain pass in South Africa.
Oudtshoorn lies in the semi-arid Klein Karoo, separated from the Garden Route coast by the Outeniqua Mountains. This unique landscape of wide valleys, dramatic passes, and ancient caves makes it feel like another world — just 50 minutes from George. Oudtshoorn's ostrich heritage, Karoo cuisine, and natural wonders make it an essential Garden Route side trip.
