Paternoster means "Our Father" in Latin — named by Portuguese sailors who prayed while navigating the treacherous coastline in the 1500s.

Fishermen still launch boats from the beach daily, hand-hauling their boats through the surf. You can buy fresh catches directly from returning boats.

Local Secrets

🐦
Tietiesbaai beach 3 km north of the village is almost always deserted. Drive the dirt road past the cemetery — free parking, no facilities, pure solitude.
💡
Buy biltong and droewors from the farm stall on the R45 before entering town. The village has no supermarket — bring groceries from Vredenburg 15 km away.
🌅
Walk the rocky point at sunset past the lighthouse towards Columbine. Dolphins are regularly spotted from the rocks, especially in autumn.

Paternoster is a whitewashed fishing village on the West Coast where time moves slowly. With a permanent population of just 2,000, it's one of the last authentic fishing communities on the Cape coast. The village gained international fame when Wolfgat was named the world's best restaurant in 2019, but the real charm is simpler: fishermen launching boats at dawn, crayfish drying on racks, and empty beaches stretching to the horizon.
